Where do you go, and what do you do when you just feel crappy and unvalidated? I have serious trepidation about publishing my thoughts on this subject, but one of the things our keynote speaker talked about at the Blissdom conference was to show vulnerability, so here it is…
I hate being “judged” for my work online via contests, votes, nominations, etc., especially when I know logically I have done a great job. Why is our(MY) worth dependent upon someoneâs vote? I’ve been “judged” in a Christmas contest on HWTM when I was a newbie, in a Fall Challenge Design contest on The City Cradle, and now on Project Nursery for a contest I didn’t even knowingly “ENTER”!!
I love what I do and the kindness from my online friends is overwhelming, but you know what they say, it takes a pound of love to overcome an ounce of “non-love”….or something like that.
I appreciate you opening up. I consider you to be a star amongst party planners and you do extraordinary work with party supplies. I myself am a faithful follower and I open my email daily to look first at what is new on your blog. I don’t think it is about your work not being good enough that isn’t the case at all (my opinion here so for others that are reading don’t throw me under the bus), I think it may have to do with the other individual per se.
As a party planner you go the extra mile for your clients with party supplies and are willing to do tutorials on your blog to help others. That is something you don’t have to do, that is just your genuine kindness and your love for what you do. Keep on doing what you do, Chris, your work is NOT sub-par and I don’t consider you as unlikeable your stats in regards to your blog, twitter and facebook page speaks loud and clear. Thousands look for your postings.
Keep your head high. Stay positive. And tell those doubting thoughts to take a hike because you have better things to do today. Yes I know that it is easier said than done. When I have negative thoughts come into my head about anything, I speak aloud positive affirmations. The negative thoughts go away. You can’t think and speak at the same time.
I cringe when I see contests like that. I clicked on yesterday, because I had seen your post..I could not understand how or why these 3 parties were chosen, but I did vote for you. One, because I thought yours was adorable. Two, because I will support anything you do. That is what I usually do..I vote to support a talented online friend.
That being said, I think it is very sad that so many women feel the need to be validated by winning a contest..Or being featured on a large blog. Yes, it is fabulous to be recognized and showcased, but it is by no means an end all stamp of approval.
